Diabetes medicines
No food after the solid-food time on your clock.
Take 80% of your long-acting insulin the night before surgery and the morning of surgery.
Do not take mealtime insulin while you are not eating.
If you use an insulin pump, continue the basal rate only. Do not give mealtime boluses while you are not eating.
If your glucose feels low, drink a small amount of a clear sugary liquid such as apple juice, then call the hospital. Do not eat food.
NSAID pain medicine
You may take your usual NSAID, such as ibuprofen, naproxen, or celecoxib, unless your surgeon named a different plan. You do not need a 7-day stop.
What to bring
Photo ID, your medication list, and a plan for a ride home after Colectomy.
Movement before surgery
Each day until surgery: walk 20–30 minutes, stand up from a chair 10 times for 2 sets, take 10 deep breaths every hour you are awake, and eat protein at each meal.
After surgery
The team will help you drink, eat, and get out of bed early, unless they tell you a specific limit. This sheet does not replace the order your surgeon writes.
This is teaching material for a demo case. Your surgeon’s written instructions win if they differ.
